The End of Softball Season

Remember way back in April and May when I devoted myself to "Spring Training"? I pledged to work out daily and get in shape to have a successful softball season. I chronicled my efforts in this blog, and I believe that it was a beneficial activity. This past Wednesday, we finished our softball season, however, with a crushing defeat. I wasn't a part of a single win all season.

Last year was a ride, to be sure. I was on a team stacked with athletes, both male and female. We could hit in the clutch, our defense was stout, and we were good baserunners. All in all, the team I was on last year was really good, and we won the league championship because of it. The trophy of our accomplishment still adorns the wall of buddy's house. It sits as testament to that magical season.

The team I was on this year was very different. We were no where near as good, and it tried my patience a little. We lost every game I was in, and besides one, they weren't even close. The team was a collection of individuals who were part of my girlfriend's workout group, and finding players each week was a struggle. As a result, it was difficult to build team camaraderie and we sometimes had to scrap the bottom of the barrel for anybody willing to throw on a uniform. For someone that had put in a lot of work, energy and sweat into being a successful part of a team effort, I was very frustrated the entire season.

My ending batting average was over .500 and I think I only made two or three errors the entire season, but other than those, my stat line was very unimpressive. I can't tell you how many times I'd get on base and be stranded by my teammates on the bases. I'm not a home run hitter, but towards the end of the season, I was trying way too hard to hit homers that I ended up doing more harm to the team.

I love playing softball, but next year will be different. I think I might make my own team. I know enough people that I can make a pretty decent team.

I'm just glad the season is over.

Always take on a 3-0 pitch ;)
